An obese mother who transported on overeating after gastric bypass surgery suffocated on food which could not squeeze into her stomach, an inquest heard.

Dianne Bernadette Cooper-Clarke, 64, died after food clogged her throat and stopped her from breathing.

She'd gone through gastric bypass surgery but stored it secret from her family and began overeating following the operation.

Her oesophagus swelled to how big an ordinary stomach and food developed completely to her throat, leading to her to suffocate, an inquest in Truro, Cornwall, heard.

She was discovered dead in her own home in Barripper, a village in west Cornwall, on December 9 this past year.

Pathologist Hugh Johnson, in the Royal Cornwall Hospital, completed a publish-mortem examination and stated a back-log of food had stopped her breathing.

'The tube which goes in the mouth towards the stomach was inflamed and food had developed completely towards the throat' he stated.

'There was an excessive amount of food inside. Doctors found no proof of cancer and experts confirmed the gastric operation was completed correctly.

'A gastric pouch cuts down on the stomach. People get round this by looking into making their oesophagus bigger.

'That's in which the food was remaining. I believe they consume a small bit and think it is going somewhere, so they've got a bit more, and it is a historical factor.

'Your oesophagus is how big just a little finger, but hers was as large as her stomach.

'I considered the meals had blocked off her breathing which caused the dying.'

Initially from Trinidad in the western world Indies, Mrs Cooper-Clarke informed her family that they had gone through surgery for cancer in March 2010 when she'd actually were built with a gastric bypass to lessen how big her stomach.

'For a minimum of annually she was eating less,' he stated.

Inside a narrative verdict, deputy coroner Andrew Cox stated: 'People don't stay with it [eating less] which is tragically what goes on.

'This isn't a natural reason for dying. It's not any sort of accident because she made a decision to eat. She died of the known complication of the elective surgical treatment of the gastric bypass.'
